Public liability cover is provided as a benefit of Scottish Hill Runners membership.

Policy summary
The SHR policy provides:
- GBP 5 million public liability insurance
- GBP 1 million professional indemnity insurance
The cover applies to SHR members, officers, and volunteer helpers in relation to hill running activities, subject to policy terms and conditions.
Who is covered
The cover applies to:
- Race organisers who are SHR members
- Race competitors who are SHR members
- Identified marshals and helpers who are not SHR members
The policy is restricted to permanent UK residents, valid in the UK, and local UK law applies.
Scope and limitations
Insurance is intended for hill races in the conventional sense. Activities outside policy scope may not be covered.
Race organisers are responsible for checking that event format and event operations are compatible with policy terms before race day.
Race organiser requirements
To use SHR insurance for a race:
- The organiser must be an SHR member.
- The organiser must comply with SHR safety rules.
- The organiser must complete and submit the insurance safety sign-off process in advance.
- The organiser must provide event safety information and retirement procedures.
Competitor responsibilities
Competitors are responsible for their own safety in hill races and must:
- Follow organiser instructions and event-specific rules
- Carry mandatory and sensible personal kit for conditions
- Follow retirement procedures if they do not start or abandon
- Support other runners in difficulty
